Officials of the agriculture department in Jamalpur are expecting bumper production of potatoes in the current season.
They are hopeful to exceed their target of getting 94600 tonnes of potato from 4730 hectares of land, said Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources.
Favourable weather, use of balanced fertiliser and absence of cold injury, one kind of disease which infects the potato plants, could give the bumper production, reports BSS citing sources.
Saiful Azam Khan, Additional Deputy Director of DAE said potato has been cultivated on 1300 hectares of land with a production target of 26000 metric tonnes (MT) in Jamalpur sadar upazila.
Agriculture officials are providing all sorts of necessary agricultural inputs among the potato farmers and encouraging them to set up light trap in their fields to kill insecticides without using chemical pesticides, Khan added.
The farmers in the district will start harvesting potato from mid February.
