Cyclone Fani likely to intensify into severe storm

Cyclone Fani, which has been strengthening in south-east Bay of Bengal, is likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm, meteorologists say.

The first cyclone of the season moved north-westwards further over the same area and may move in a north-westerly direction, the Met Offices of Bangladesh and India said on Sunday, reports bdnews24.com.

It was situated about 990 km southeast of Chennai coast in Tamil Nadu state of India and about 1700 km from Chattogram coast.

The cyclone is likely to intensify till Wednesday evening and thereafter re-curve north-eastwards gradually, according to India Meteorological Department.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Saturday said the cyclonic storm may move towards Andhra coast in India.

It asked the maritime ports to keep hoisted distant warning signal No. 2. All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay and deep sea have been advised to proceed with caution till further notice.

Bangladesh has proposed the name Fani, pronounced ‘Foni’ and meaning snake.

In Tuesday’s forecast, the Met Office said rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at a few places over Rangpur and Sylhet divisions and at one or two places over Rajshahi, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions and the regions of Cumilla and Kushtia with hails at isolated places.

Weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country.

Mild to moderate heat wave sweeping over Rajshahi and Khulna divisions and the regions of Tangail, Faridpur, Gopalgonj, Dhaka and Rangmati may continue.

Day and night temperature may rise slightly over the country.
