Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Mohammad Javed Patwary on Monday said the cyber unit of the police headquarters will be strengthened for patrolling cyber-crimes, including the spread of rumours through social media.

He came up with the remarks while briefing reporters at the police headquarters on the security measures taken for the Mourning Day to be observed on August 15 and ahead of Eid-ul-Azha to be celebrated on August 22.

The unit will be strengthened in coordination with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Special Branch (SB) and Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), said the IGP.

Besides, he said, district police have been directed to form cyber unit in each district, UNB reported.

He said online news portals which spread rumours during the student protests have been identified and a total of 21 cases filed in this connection.

“No one will be spared,” warned the IGP.
