Cumilla EPZ fire under control after nine-hour battle

Fire fighters have fought for around nine hours, finally bringing under control the fire that broke out at a spinning mill engulfing the whole of it in a flash in Cumilla Export Processing Zone (EPZ) on Monday night.

They managed to bring the fire that started at the RN Spinning Mill around 9:30pm, under control around 6:00am, said Ratan Kumar Nath, assistant director of Cumilla Fire Service and Civil Defence.

He said three of their units first rushed to the scene and tried to battle the fire, but considering the size of the blaze and finding their efforts little as against it, they called for more units.

Seven units were then dispatched to fight the blaze, which finally came under control after around nine hours of frantic efforts, Ratan said, adding that it might take two more hours to douse the fire completely.

He could not confirm neither the cause of the fire or the exact extent of losses from it, only saying that the fire started at the acrylic division of the factory and the losses could go up to several millions of taka.

Though the fire was of a bigger size, it could not cause any casualty for what a factory mechanical worker, Didar said all the factory staff and workers scrambled out of the factory soon after the fire alarm.

Deputy Commissioner Md Abul Fazal Mir and Superintendent of Police Md Syed Nurul Islam and other police and RAB officials visited the place of occurrence, local media reported.

A six-member committee, headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner Jahid Hasan Siddique, to investigate the fire incident and asked to submit their report within seven working days.

Quite a number of fire incidents have taken place across the country for the last few months with the highest and deadliest in Dhaka city.
