Ctg city to take new shape in two years: Mayor

Chattogram mayor AJM Nasir Uddin on Monday conveyed his gratitude to the city residents for enduring sufferings resulting from road cutting in the port city by different service providers.

Tolerance of the present woes will bring them lasting peace and happiness in the near future, the mayor said.

The mayor assured that he would fulfil all his election pledges within his five-year tenure and the people will see a new city of Chattogram by 2020. The development works will be fully visible by that time as works of most of the projects undertaken by the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) are nearing completion.

"Different development organisations are now working to provide more services to the citizens and ensure their better living. All these works are on development of roads. This is a labour pain period for giving birth to a new city. Please have patience and endure it for the time being," he said.

Addressing a meet-the-people gathering on completion of three years of his tenure as the mayor, Nasir Uddin discussed various aspects of the performance of the CCC during the financial year 2017-18 and the works to be done in the next two years of his tenure.

Representatives from cross sections of the people, business leaders, engineers, professionals and socio-cultural organisations addressed the meeting.

They hailed various steps taken by the CCC in addressing people's sufferings and placed new recommendations and suggestions.

The meeting was arranged at the International Convention Center on the Chatteswari Road at Kazir Dewri in the city.

Chief Executive Officer of the CCC Md Shamsuddoha delivered the welcome address.

The city corporation presented different ward-based development activities completed in the last fiscal year, the ongoing projects under the Annual Development Programme (ADP) and donor agencies, including JICA, and education and health services provided by the CCC and other agencies.

Emphasising the welfare-oriented activities and building a green and clean city, the mayor said his steps to make footpaths free for the pedestrians, make the city sky free of billboards and neon signs, ward-based beautifications and greening of road dividers have been applauded by the citizens.

The mayor said he has introduced door-to-door waste collection keeping the roads and lanes neat with the rising of the sun, illumination of roads and lanes by tube lights and other ward-based development activities in line with his election manifesto.

AJM Nasir, also general secretary of the ruling Awami League Chattogram city unit, said he has streamlined the street vendors who in the past grabbed almost all the city roads causing severe trouble for the citizens.

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself shouldered the development of Chattogram in 2009.

She is very much keen to develop Chattogram as a modern city and necessary projects for the CCC are being approved by the ECNEC.
