Gang rape in Gaibandha: Police arrest three

Gaibandha police have arrested three people in a case over the alleged gang rape of a girl in Sadullahpur upazila of the district.

The victim has completed her JSC examination recently.

Five people were accused in the case, including the son of a local Jubo League leader.

Sadullahpur Police OC Borhan Uddin said the rape occurred on Friday evening in the Noldanga Government Food Silo area of the upazila.

Locals detained the three after the incident and handed them over to police.

A case was filed against five suspects, including the three caught, at the local police station on Saturday.

The suspects are: Shohag Miah, 23, the son of Noldanga Union Awami Jubo League Convener Dudu Miah, Babu Miah, 22, Shariful Islam, 21, Rubel Miah, 22, and Khushu Miah, 23.

The victim was sent to Gaibandha Modern Sadar Hospital for treatment and medical tests.

The girl had gone with her mother to Noldanga Bazar on Friday to buy clothes, OC Borhan Uddin said. After shopping her mother told her to go home while she went to her father’s house.

According to bdnews24, Shohag stopped her near the silo as she was going home alone, the OC said.

“The perpetrators grabbed her, covered her face with her scarf, took her to the nearby sugarcane field and raped her.

Locals came running when they heard the girl’s screams and managed to catch Shariful and Babu. Shohag was detained by locals from a store in the Noldanga Rail Gate area.

Locals beat Shohag, Babu and Shariful before turning them over to police, but Rubel and Khushu are at large.

The three detainees have confessed to the rape, the OC said. They say the two absconding suspects also took part in the rape.

Locals say an angry crowd vandalised a business owned by Shohag’s father Dudu.
