BGB seizes over Tk 750m smuggled goods in May

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized smuggled goods and contraband narcotic items worth around Tk 750 million (Tk 75.56 crore) conducting anti-smuggling drives across the country, mostly in frontier areas, in May this year.

Seized contraband narcotic items, included 7,66,828 pieces Yaba pills, 5,076 bottles of foreign wines, 271 local wines, 1993 canes of bear, 28,700 bottles of phensidyl, 1390kg hemp, 1.250kg heroin (brown sugar), 6,24,730 pieces of injections and 7,39,620 other tablets, reports UNB.

Other seized smuggled goods, included 10.899 kg gold, 16,770 pieces of Sharees, 6,073 pieces of three pieces/shirt pieces, 3313 meters fabrics, 7997 pieces readymade garments, 1121 spare parts of vehicles, eight pick-up, and seven CNG-run auto-rickshaws, 10 trucks, 48 motorcycles and 15,072 cubic feet wood and also 3,857 kg tea.

The paramilitary force also seized two pistols, four one-shooter guns, nine round bullets and four magazines.

Besides, the BGB arrested 151 people over their alleged involvement in smuggling contraband items and drugs between May 1 and May 31.

The BGB arrested 83 Bangladeshis for illegally crossing Bangladesh borders and then handed them over to local police stations. Ten Indians were arrested for illegally trespassing into Bangladesh territory from India. Of them, nine were handed over to Indian BSF during the period, said BGB Headquarters Public Relations Officer Mohsin Reza.

So far, smuggled goods and illegal drugs worth around  Tk 4.6813 billion (Tk 468.13 crore) have been seized by the BGB in first five months till May 31, he added.
