Two suspected drug peddlers were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Baharchhara Uttar Shilkhani on Marine Drive road in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar district early Monday.

The deceased were identified as Abdur Rahman, 42, son of Bashir Ahmed of Sabrang, Lejirpara in Teknaf and Omar Faruk, 31, son of Kabir Ahmed of Kunia village in Ramu, reports UNB.

Being tipped off that a consignment of drug will be smuggled into the country through Marine Drive route, a RAB team took position in the area, said Mohiuddin Faruki, company commander (SP), RAB-2.

They signalled a private car to stop, but the drug peddlers in the car opened fire on the RAB members forcing them to fire back in self-defence, triggering a gunfight, he said.

The elite force rescued the two injured drug peddlers from the spot and admitted them to Teknaf Hospital where doctors declared them dead.

The elite force members recovered 300 bottles of phensedyl, a foreign pistol, 4,000 Yaba tablets, four rounds of bullet and seized the private car.
