A total of 1,012 journalists have so far contracted Covid-19 and 26 of them died from it in the country, according to a local journalists’ platform.

Eleven journalists also died with symptoms, said ‘Our Media, Our Rights’ in a statement on Wednesday.

Most of the infected journalists, 712, are based in Dhaka while the rest, 300, elsewhere in the country.

Among the journalists, 44 are now active cases while 942 have recovered and joined their offices.

All these infected newspersons are from 192 national and regional news outlets – 117 newspapers, 32 television channels, 36 online media outlets, five radio stations and two news agencies.

Newspersons all over the world, including Bangladesh, have been facing the brunt of the virus infection due to their role in covering events from the frontline during the pandemic.

Bangladesh ranks fifth in the world in terms of Covid-19-related deaths among newspersons, according to the Press Emblem Campaign (PEC).

A total of 442 media workers in 52 countries have so far died from the deadly disease, PEC data shows.

Peru accounts for 93 deaths of journalists from Covid-19 and India 47, ranking first and second respectively in the PEC index.
