Court again defers verdict on double murder case against lawmaker’s son

A Dhaka court on Thursday again deferred the verdict in the New Eskaton double murder case filed against Bakhtiar Alam Rony, son of ruling Awami League lawmaker Pinu Khan.

The verdict was deferred as the prosecution filed a petition to summon the investigation officer of the case for rehearing.

Following the petition, Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Session Judge's court -1 Md Monjurul Imam asked Dipak Kumar Das, the investigation officer of the case, to present a mobile call list to the court on October 17.

The prosecution in a written application said when the investigation officer of the case gave statement to the court, the Call Details Record (CDR) of the case was not placed before the court. Now, the IO needs to appear before the court to show this evidence.

After hearing from the two sides, the court passed the order, according to UNB.

Earlier, the court was scheduled to deliver verdict on May 8.

However, the judgment in the case was deferred on the day as Judge Md Al Mamun of the Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court-1 of Dhaka said he could not prepare the judgment. So, he decided to defer the delivery of the judgment.

On April 13 in 2015, Bakhtiar Alam Rony, supposedly a drug addict, opened fire on people indiscriminately near Janakantha Bhaban in New Eskaton area from his car, leaving two people -- rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim and Janakantha's auto-rickshaw driver Yakub --injured with bullets.

Hakim succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on April 15 while Yeakub died at the hospital on April 23.

On April 15, a case was filed with Ramna Police Station against unidentified people in this connection.

On June 1, law enforces arrested Rony from his Dhanmondi residence in connection with the firing.

Detective Branch Sub-Inspector Dipak Kumar Das charged Rony in court on July 21, 2015 after investigating the case.

Judge Shamsunnahar of Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court No. 2 framed charges against Rony on March 6 in 2017.

Judge Md Al Mamun of Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court No. 1 May 8 for delivering verdict after hearing arguments on Apr 10 this year.
