Countrywide survey on sound level measurement begins to control noise pollution

A countrywide survey on sound level measurement has begun to identify noise polluting groups and to make awareness among the people about the issue.

The Centre for Atmospheric Pollution Studies (CAPS) of Stamford University Bangladesh is now carrying out a countywide survey on noise level measurement.

Prof Dr Ahmad Kamruzzaman Majumder, chairman of the CAPS and head of the environmental science department and dean of science faculty at Stamford University Bangladesh, is leading the research team of the survey.

The survey will be carried out in every district town in order to control the noise pollution.

Muhammad Anowarul Hoque, secretary general at ‘Save Our Sea’ who is also involved in the survey, said that the activities of the survey and awareness campaign in this regard officially began on Tuesday (February 15) from Manikganj district town.

On the occasion, the CAPS in collaboration with EQMS Consulting Limited arranged a views-exchange meeting in the auditorium of Manikganj Zia Parishad. Nur Alam, deputy director of Department of Environment (DoE) in Manikganj, presided over the meeting, while Ramzan Ali, Mayor of Manikganj Municipality Mayor, was present as the chief guest.

Dr Abu Bakar Siddique, assistant professor at Col Malek Medical College; Md Noor Hossain, district information officer; Md Anwar Hossain, deputy director of Department of Narcotics Control; Biplob Kumar Mandal, headmaster of Oxford School, Kazi Maksuda Yasmin, headmistress of Govt High School; Arju Khanam, headmistress of SK Government Girls High School; and Dr Md Kauser Mia, medical officer at Manikganj Sadar Upazila Health Complex; also spoke on the occasion, among others.

Local elite persons, including imams of various mosques in the district town, also joined the event.

In his speech, Mayor Ramzan Ali said that the noise polluting group should be identified first. In this case, the drivers should be alerted first. Posters need to be put up in places of interest to make everyone aware.

Dr Abu Bakar Siddique said that there are environmental laws to control noise pollution but there is no implementation.

This pollution causes various diseases including heartbeat, pressure and diabetes. Noise pollution is also caused by children playing games. For this reason, the chances of becoming deaf are high, he added.
