A housewife allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself after being tortured reportedly by her husband for dowry at Sonatundi village in Sreepur upazila here on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Jasmine Nahar, 20, wife of Rentu Molla, 30 of the village.
Mahbubur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station said police recovered the hanging body of Jasmine from her house last night, UNB reported.
Quoting local people, the OC said Abdul Aziz of Sadar upazila married off her daughter Jasmine with Rentu seven months ago.
Rentu had been demanding Tk 0.2 million (2 lakh) as dowry and used to torture Jasmine for the money. Local people tried to resolve the issue several times through arbitration meeting but failed.
A case was filed in this regard.
