Water spinach cultivation expands across Bogura

BOGURA, May 08: High production of water spinach has brought smile on the faces of grassroots farmers in the district this season.

Harun-or-Rashid of Ashunja village under Dupchanchia upazila said production is higher this year that the previous season.

"We are also happy over the present market price", the grower further said.

Officials at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said water spinach cultivation is expanding across the region for bumper yield and high profit.

Each kg of the leafy vegetable is selling at Tk 20 to Tk 25 in the retail market and Tk 15 to Tk 18 in the wholesale market.

More than 480 peasants in Dupchanchia, Sonatola, Nandigram, Sariakandi, Dhunot, Gabtoly, Shibganj, Shajahanpur, Adamdighi, Sherpur and Sadar upazilas have attained self-reliant by growing the item.

"I have cultivated water spinach on nine decimals of land this season spending Tk 3,800," said farmer Kafil Uddin of Shibganj upazila.

He said he started harvesting his produce from the last week.

Sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman said the department provides all necessary support to the farmers in this connection so that they can get a good yield every season.
