Two get life term for murder in Jashore

A court in Jashore district on Wednesday sentenced two people to life term imprisonment for killing a man of Haridrapota village in Jhikargachha upazila in 2002.

The convicts are Abdul Aziz Laltu, son of jamal Uddin Sardar and Rafiqul Islam, son of Sabed Ali of Haridrapota village.

The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each, and in case of its non-payment, each of them will have to suffer six months more in rigorous imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, one Tofazzal Sardar of Haridrapota village in Jhikargachha upazila had an enmity with the convicts over a piece of land.

On October 24, 2002, when the convicts went to the disputed land to cut a palm tree, Tofazzal along with his three sons and daughter resisted them.

Later, an altercation ensued among them and at one stage the convicts hit Abdul Alim, son of Tofazzal with an axe, leaving him dead on the spot, UNB reports.

A case was filed with Jhikargachha Police Station in this connection.

Police submitted charge-sheet against seven people.

After examining records and witnesses, Jashore Special Judge Sheikh Faruk Hossain handed down the verdict and acquitted four others as allegations brought against them could not be proved.
