Three die as wild elephants go on rampage

Three people were trampled to death by wild elephants in Kadurkhil, Syednagar, and Joistapura areas of Boalkhali upazila under Chattogram district on Sunday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Abu Taher Mistri, 60, Jaker Hossain, 65, former headmaster of BB Govt Primary School, and farmer Abdul Mabud, 60, reports a news agency.

Member from ward-1 of Kadurkhil union parishad Abdul Karim said a herd of 4-5 elephants attacked Taher while he was working at his mustard field in Sharifpara in the morning, leaving him dead on the spot.

The wild elephants then swooped on Jaker Hossain near Chandarhat Jame Mosque in Syednager, leaving him critically injured, said his daughter Fahmina Afroz.

Later, he was taken to Upazila Health Complex from where he was shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, she added.

On the way to the hill, the elephant herd attacked farmer Abdul Mabud at Amirpara of Joustapura, leaving him dead on the spot.

Earlier on Saturday, nine elephants came down to the locality and stayed at a nut orchard near Purbo Kadurkhil throughout the night.
