Serious erosion, caused by upper stream of the Teesta river, engulfed a vast tract of cropland from the very beginning of monsoon under Sunderganj upazila in Gaibandha.

The people will lose everything and become helpless if the current trend of river erosion continues, it is feared.

Meanwhile, hundreds of homes and a vast tract of land have been devoured by the mighty river as the strong tide washed away the village protection dyke. Therefore, effective measures need to be taken immediately to prevent the erosion.

To avoid the unexpected situation, the farmers of Kapasia union of the upazila have started dumping geo bags. The jute farmers are the worst sufferers of the flood.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Reza-e-Mahmud said the farmers of Tarapur, Kapasia, Chandipur and Horipur of the upazila mostly depend on jute farming every season but they were affected by the recent flood. The peasants of the area are trying to save their farmland by dumping sand-filled bags, he added.

Many houses and a vast tract of cropland are facing erosion following the flood as the water level of the Teesta river has increased over the last few days. The farmers said if necessary steps are not taken immediately to prevent the erosion, a vast tract of cropland will go under water.

Farmer Riaz of Hazrika village said he has cultivated Tosa jute on three bighas of land aiming to make profit but sudden stream of the Teesta river has engulfed his cropland. The peasants have lost their way to protect their prospective cropland including jute, he added.
