BOGURA, Sep 12: Growers across Sonatola and Sarikandi upazilas of the district are now busy in harvesting and processing the newly-harvested Upshi Aus paddy.

Cultivators are also happy as they are getting sufficient farm labourers at a low rate.

Sources said farmers are to spend Tk 4,500 to Tk 5,000 to harvest a bigha of Boro paddy while Tk 2,000 to Tk 2,500 for Upshi variety.

Kamal Hossain of Sarikandi upazila said Upshi harvest started around fifteen days ago in the district and it will complete within a week.

"I have cultivated Upshi Aus on 23 decimals of land this season investing Tk 9,000 and got over 12 maunds of yield," said farmer Harun or Rashid under Sonatola upazila.

"The market price of the paddy is satisfactory this season", he added.

Upazila agriculture officials said Upshi paddy farming is profitable.

Grassroots farmers should bring more land under the farming of the paddy variety as it requires low production cost, he added.

Around 50 maunds of paddy can be produce from a hectare of land. For this, Upshi is popular among the growers, said Deputy Director of DAE Pratul Chandra Sarker.
