CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Sept 14: Schools, madrasahs, dwellings and some government and non-government structures of Chapainawabganj Sadar are in a serious threat of collapse after receding floodwater.
Around 150 bighas of cropland under Debinagar union have already collapsed. Most of the people of the area are trying to find safe places for shifting.
In a recent visit this correspondent found some portion of the upazila protection dam has already collapsed nearby Tarfa Ferighat. For that, Ekata Government Primary School, Debinagar High School, Debinagar Girls' High School and Debinagar Dakhil Madrash are in a serious threat. If the situation continues for a few days around 40,000 people will be homeless.
Debinagar union council chairman Abdur Rzzak said, "If an effective measure has not been taken mosques, educational institutions, madrasahs and schools of Diljal Hazitola, Lal Mohammad Munsitola, Bashed Mondaltala and Dhulaurirhat village of the union will be collapsed within a short time."
Executive engineer of Water Devepolment Board (WDB), Chapainawabganj office, Shahedul Alam said, "We are not able repair the village protection dam due to inadequate fund. We have informed the situation to the higher authority."
Meanwhile, in Bogra, some dwellings on the bank of Ichhamati river have been collapsed after receding floodwater under Dhunat upazila.
Local sources said a good number of cultivators have already lost their agricultural lands. The situation is getting worsen day by day. Villagers have already started shifting other places.
Sources from the Water Development Board (WDB) said the situation is beyond control this time. The Ichhamati is flowing above 13 centimeter of the danger level in the area.
Municipality mayor AJM Badsha said he is informed over the situation. He assured of taking effective measures regarding this.
