Rangpur spinach cultivators in joyous mood with plentiful output

RANGPUR, Nov 08: Spinach cultivators in the district are in joyous mood as they are achieving an excellent yield of their produce during this year.

A good number of growers said that with the hope to earn handsome profit they cultivated the leafy vegetable in recent times because they failed to make satisfactory profit from farming some other crops.

Their efforts proved successful as they have already witnessed a good output of their produce and also earned handsome profit as well, growers said.

While visiting different areas of the district this FE correspondent saw farmers busy taking care of their vegetable fields. Many were found harvesting their produces.

Ahidul, a spinach grower of Nabdiganj village at Pirgachha upazila told this correspondent that he cultivated 'palong shak' on one bigha (50 decimals) of land this season. He has already earned over Tk 8,000 by selling his produce and is expecting to earn more profit during the rest of the time.

Nur Hossain, another cultivator of Ranipukur area under Mithapukur upazila said he has already earned Tk 7,000 by growing the vegetable on his 35 decimals of land. He said at the initial stage of harvesting he made huge profit from the vegetable this year which will encourage him to expand its farming next year, he added.

A good number of farmers of the region have changed their financial condition by farming different leafy vegetables including spinach as its farming has proved lucrative in recent years, sources said.

Presently, different kitchen markets of the region are overflowing with huge quantities of leafy vegetables including spinach. The quantity is on the rise as there has been a bumper production of the vegetable this year said Ekramul Haq, a wholesaler at Rangpur city Bazar.

According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Rangpur official sources the soil of many areas in the district is very much suitable for spinach cultivation.

Farmers have been also earning good profit from cultivation of different varieties of vegetables including 'palong shak' in recent years. Growers are given necessary advices and assistances by the DAE officials in this regard, sources added.
