RANGPUR, May 11: A good yield of jute is likely to be achieved in five districts under Rangpur agriculture region during the current season.
This year the jute cultivators of Rangpur agriculture region are delighted to witness a favourable weather condition which is predicting a good yield of the crop.
While visiting some areas of the region this FE correspondent saw that jute plants under the region growing well.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur official sources said the department has set a target to cultivate jute on around 58,250 hectares of land during this season in five districts in the zone. The districts are Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat.
Idris ali, a farmer of Mirzapur area at Mithapukur Upazila in Rangpur told The Financial Express that he cultivated the golden fibre on one bigha of land during this season and plants are growing well, signaling an abundant production of the crop. If the weather remains congenial he will get satisfactory output, he said.
Amirul Mia, another farmer of Haragachh area at Kawnia upazila in Rangpur said he cultivated the cash crop on one and half bigha of land this year and is expecting a plenteous production of the crop, if the weather remains conducive.
Last year he got good yield as well as satisfactory price of jute which encouraged him to enhance its farming this season, he said.
The landless and river eroded char people have also brought more land under jute farming this year.
DAE sources said sufficient water supply, necessary agri-inputs and congenial weather condition have made the farmers optimistic of a good output of the crop. Growers are being given necessary advices and assistance in this regard to boost the production of the crop this year, sources added.
Meanwhile, BSS adds: In Manikganj, DAE has brought a total of 3,528 hectares of land under jute cultivation in all seven upazilas in the district with a production target of 46,353 bales during the current season.
Of the total, 2,956 hectares of land were brought under Tosha variety of jute with a production target of 40,061 bales, 776 hectares local variety with a production target of 6093 bales and 16 hectares kenaf with a production target of 253 bales.
The DAE sources said cultivation of jute is increasing every year in the district as growers are getting fair price of their products.
They said 883 hectares were cultivated in Manikganj Sadar, 344 hectares in Saturia, 991 hectares in Singair, 317 hectares in Harirampur, 237 hectares in Shibalaya, 324 hectares in Ghior and 432 hectares in Daulatpur during the current season.
Abdus Salam (40), a farmer of Kangsha village under Singair upazila said, "We are interested in cultivating jute as it gives us cash money during lean period. Sticks of jute are also used for different household purposes."
