RANGPUR, Oct 29: Turmeric cultivators in the district are optimistic about achieving a good yield of their produce during the current season on account of a congenial weather condition which has been prevailing across the region.
Sources said the farmers are earning good profit through the cultivation of the crop in recent years which is encouraging them to enhance its cultivation this season.
According to sources turmeric is being cultivated abundantly at different areas including Pairaband, Ranipukur, Boiriganj of Mithapukur upazila, Nabdiganj, Deuti of Pirgachha upazila, Alampur, Ikorchali, Dangapara of Taraganj upazila and Nagerhat,Laldighi of Badarganj upazila in the district.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur sources said, more than 1000 hectares of land have been brought under turmeric cultivation in 8 upazilas under the district during this season.
Due to good profit its farming is on the rise across the region as the peasants are showing more interest in farming the crop in recent years, sources said.
DAE sources said the atmosphere and moderate rainfall and soil of the region are also congenial to the farming of different varieties of spicy crops including turmeric and some other spicy crops.
Sahrul Huda, a turmeric grower of Chawdhurypara village of Alampur union in Taraganj upazila said he prefers spicy crop farming than farming of other crops due to huge profit. He cultivated turmeric on 40 decimals of land this season. During last few years he has been getting a good yield as well as expected profit from farming of the crop, he also said.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur sources said owing to good profit the farmers of the region are getting interested to cultivate spicy crops including turmeric in recent years. The department has taken various steps including timely supply of necessary agri-inputs to increase production of spicy crops including turmeric in the region, sources added.
