Rajshahi Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (RWASA) is going to implement a mega project for providing treated water to people of the city and its outskirts.

The project titled ‘Rajshahi WASA Surface Water Treatment Plant’ will be implemented with an estimated cost of Tk 40.62 billion (Tk 4,062 crore).

Upon its successful implementation by July 2022, people of the city and Nowhata and Katakhali municipalities will be brought under the coverage network of safe drinking water supply.

The WASA authority revealed this while inaugurating its second office building in the city Sunday, reports BSS.

Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton attended and addressed the opening ceremony as the chief guest with Rajshahi WASA Managing Director Sultan Adbul Hamid in the chair.

Deputy Managing Director Tuhinur Alam, Secretary Amirul Islam and Superintending Engineer Parvej Mahmud also spoke.

Through his multimedia presentation, Engineer Parvej Mahmud told the meeting that RWASA has implemented three development projects involving Tk 974.1 million during last nine and a half years with a view to bringing a qualitative change in the city’s water supply system.

“We have completed the feasibility study of Surface Water Treatment Plant in Rajshahi WASA at a cost of around Tk 18.9 million,” said Parvej Mamud.

Forty five kilometres pipeline with 150-milimeter diameter, 70 kilometers pipeline with 100-milimeter diameter, 20 new production pumps and 28 submersible pumps were installed.

Besides, 600 washouts and 100 flow-meters were commissioned under the project. Currently, commissioning work on 68-kilometer pipelines width ranging from 100 to 300 millimeters is progressing.

In addition to reactivation of 40 production pumps, installation work on 22 new production pumps and 32 water points is progressing.

Engineer Mamud said all the RWASA’s procurement activities are being operated through e-GP process besides launching e-filling. Computerised billing system has been launched.

At present, water charges are being received from the consumers through mobile banking.

The government has adopted the mega project to remove city’s water problem. Under the project, water from the Padma River will be supplied to households for only drinking purpose after necessary treatment.

Under a 40-year water supply management master plan, the mega project has been adopted to supply safe drinking water to the city people. Engineer Parvez Mamud said the project will carry water through pipeline from the Padma River, purify it and then supply it to city houses.

The plant will be set up at Farhadpur, 26.5 kilometers west from the city centre under Godagari upazila. Haripur of Paba upazila and Yousufpur of Charghat upazila have also been chosen as alternative spots for setting up the plant.

From this water purification plant, fresh drinking water will be supplied to all 30 wards of Rajshahi City Corporation and its surrounding areas as well as 11 unions of Katakhali and Naohata municipal areas.

All old pipelines and hydrants of the city will also be repaired and renovated under the project.
