PABNA, Nov 01: A good number of farmers at different upazilas in the district have been using light trap method to control pests in their Aman fields.
The environment-friendly and low-cost method is gaining popularity among poor and marginal farmers as it brings better result than costlier ones.
Framers hang a hurricane with a stick at one corner of the field and put a bucket full of water under the hurricane after the sun set. Different types of pests are attracted to the light, fall into the water and die.
"I use the easy method to check pests in my Aman paddy field. It is an effective method," said Hidayeet Ullah, a marginal farmer of Dapunia village under Ishwardi upazila.
A local NGO provided training to 60 marginal farmers of Dapunia and Sara unions under Ishwardi upazila on the light trap method.
The NGO officials said, "Under a project, we provided training to 60 marginal farmers in the upazila on pest control by using light trap. It is environment-friendly and has no side effects."
"We are encouraging farmers to use the process to control pests on their fields as it is easy to use and cheap. It contributes to integrated pest control management," said Rowshan Jamal, Ishawardi upazila agriculture officer.
