Over fifty illegal slum-dwellers' structures were demolished on railway land in the Koila Ghat area in the town adjacent to Railway Boro Station on Monday.

After lunch, the drive was abandoned when evicted people staged a protest rally and stood before the bulldozer to bar further eviction.

The eviction team comprised Chattogram Rly Landed Properties Officer Mahbubul Karim, Chattogram Div Manager Shams Md Tushar, Div Commercial Officer Ansar Ali, Kanungo (Laksham) Kaoser Ahmed, Rly Sub Assistant Engineer Md Liakot Ali, Rly Nirapotta Bahini (RNB) Commander Satyajit Dham, Chandpur Boro Rly Station Master Shoeb Shikder., Chandpur Sadar Model Thana OC Abdur Rashid.

Locals said that the evicted slum-dwellers who are mostly river-eroded homeless people of Raj Rajeswar char, Tarabunia char, Alurbazar char, Ishanbala and Balarchar and a few other char areas under Chandpur Sadar Upazila have been residing here in shanties for 30 to 33 years.

Talking to this correspondent, Mahbubul Karim says, "During Mujib Borsho we have a plan to build secured boundary walls here to keep the railway properties safe and secured". "The local people have extended their co-operation in our drive", he added.
