A nine-year-old child has died and another elderly man has gone missing after a trawler capsized during a boat race in Bhola’s Borhanuddin upazila.

The event was organised from the Borhanuddion launch terminal to Shantirhat area to celebrate Durga Puja. The watercraft capsized near the Fakir Bari area at the upazila’s Deula marsh located on the Tetulia River at around 5:00 pm on Friday, said Asim Kumar Sikder, chief of Borhanuddin Police Station.

The deceased was identified as Sharif from upazila’s Gangapur union.

Police could not provide further information about Sattar Bepari, 60, who has been missing since the occurrence, bdnews24 reported.

“A trawler carrying hundreds of visitors sank on the river during the boat race. Later a fire service team, along with the local residents, rescued all the passengers aside from Sharif and Sattar.”

Sharif was found dead in the evening.
