Naogaon pumpkin peasants making good profit

NAOGAON, Oct 30: Farmers in the district are making a good profit as they have achieved a bumper output of pumpkin this season. 

According to the district office of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), a total of 365 hectares of land were brought under pumpkin cultivation this year while the amount was 260 hectares last year.

At least 3,000 farmers were engaged in farming the vegetable this season. Bumper yield of the product and its high profit encouraged many others to follow them.

Wholesaler Amzad Hossain of Paharpur area under Sadar Upazila informed evert week around 20 to 25 tonnes of pumpkin are being sent to different areas of the country including Dhaka, Jashore, Khulna and Narail.

Farmer Khairul Alam of Uttar Laxmipur village under Sadar upazila said he cultivated pumpkin on one bigha of land. He is expecting around 100 to 110 maunds of production.

Monojit Kumar Mallik, deputy director of DAE, Naogaon, said peasants of the district are receiving a good output of pumpkin this year.

The agriculture officers have continued their efforts to boost pumpkin cultivation in the district, he added.
