Mymensingh City Corporation goes to polls Sunday

The first ever election to Mymensingh City Corporation will be held on Sunday to decide only its councillors as the lone mayoral candidate has already been elected unopposed.

The balloting for 33 general councillor posts and 11 reserved seats (exclusively for women) will be held from 8am to 4pm without any break.

There are 296,938 voters under 33 wards of the 12th city corporation of the country, reports UNB.

Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be used in all the 127 polling stations. A total of 2,026 EVMs will be used in the city polls.

Awami League mayoral contender Ekramul Haque Titu has already been elected uncontested as there was no rival candidate against him after the withdrawal of candidature by Jatiya Party mayoral contestant Jahangir Ahmed.

The Election Commission has taken all the necessary preparations to hold the election in a peaceful manner using EVMs, said EC Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed on Saturday.

He said presiding officers have already collected election materials, including EVMs.

Besides, four upazila parishads, where polls were earlier postponed, will go to election on Sunday.

Of the upazilas, the balloting will be held to chairman, vice chairman and women vice chairman posts in Aditmari upazila of Lalmonirhat, Trishal of Mymensingh and Barua of Cumilla, while only chairman post in Daldhaka of Nilphamari.
