Train rams bus in Chattogram, killing one

One person was killed and 22 others were injured after a train rammed a bus on a rail crossing in Chattogram’s Mirsharai.

The accident occurred at the Bariarhat Rail Crossing area around 4:00am on Sunday, said railway police OC Mostafiz Bhuiyan.

The Bijoy Express was on its way from Mymensingh to Chattogram when it struck an Alam Paribahan bus headed from Dhaka to Khagrachhari as it was crossing the tracks.

The bus then overturned onto the tracks, said Mirsarai Fire Service Senior Station Officer Rabiul Azam. The train continued to push the bus for nearly 50 metres before coming to a halt.

Fire service officials arrived at the scene soon afterwards, recovered the bus passengers from the wreckage and sent them to a local hospital, reports bdnews24.

The deceased has been identified as 55-year-old Sunirmal Chakma. The injured bus driver is currently in critical condition. A total of 12 victims, including the driver, have been taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for treatment.

The accident forced a halt on the Dhaka-Chattogram rail line. Train service was resumed around 5:50am after the bus was removed from the tracks, said police OC Mostafiz Bhuiyan.
