Lucrative price boosts sesame cultivation in Sirajganj

SIRAJGANJ, Jan 20: Sesame is being cultivated abundantly across Sirajganj district due to its lucrative price this season.

Farmers of the district showed more interest to grow the crops on a large scale.  Every season sesame farming is increasing gradually as they are getting handsome profit.

Getting repeated abundant production and good market price last year, hundreds of sesame cultivators of Jamuna river basin were delighted. This year its cultivation expanded with the assistance of authority concerned.

After recession of water from the basin the farmers of the district began tilling land, said Sub-Assistance Agriculture Officer Azizur Rahman. The peasants have also sown the quality seed in last Kartik to Agrahayan taking help of modern technology, he added. 

They can harvest the crop after 100 to 120 days of its cultivation if the weather condition remains favourable, said farmer Jamil Uddin under Kazipur upazila. If the crops grow well the farmer can make over Tk 30,000 to 50,000 from a bigha of land paying production cost, he said.

The quality sesame is being sold in the kitchen market at Tk 70 to 75 per kg in the retail market while Tk 65 to 68 in the wholesale markets. After harvesting the sesame crop the price may come down. The peasants are taking preparation to harvest the crops as it ripening across the region.

The farmers of the area have shown more interest to bring the crops abundantly in all upazilas of the district as they have been given logistic support to cultivate the crops.

Around 500 hectares of land have been brought under sesame cultivation this season in the region, said a DAE official. They will harvest the crops a within very short time, DAE added.
