Jute harvest going on in Gopalganj, Nilphamari

GOPALGANJ, July 26: Jute harvest is going on in full swing in the district this season.

Sources said newly-harvested jute has already appeared in the local markets and growers are satisfied over the present price.

Farmers' sources cultivators are happy as they are getting satisfactory production and good market prices.

Jute is being sold at Tk 1,900 to Tk 2,000 per maund in the market.

Some 20 to 25 per cent harvest has so far completed, farmers said.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Gopalganj, official sources said, a total of 23,950 hectares of land have been brought under jute cultivation in five upazilas of the district where production target fixed at 2,86,841 tonnes.

Prodit Halder, sub-assistant agriculture office of DAE, Raghunathpur Block under Gopalganj Sadar, said soil of the area is suitable for jute farming.

Farming of the item is profitable. Growers should expand jute production to solve their financial condition.

Samir Kumar Goshwami, deputy director, Agriculture, Gopalganj, said favourable weather condition and smooth supply of agri-inputs helped the peasants to get the desired jute output.

Our Nilphamari correspondent adds: Farmers have started harvesting the cash crop in the district.

Sources said growers are trying to complete the harvest early to take preparation for Aman cultivation.

DAE sources said some 11,408 hectares of land were brought under the cultivation of jute this season.

Production target was fixed at 1,20,118 bales.

A good number of jute growers were affected by hail storm at the beginning of the crop cultivation in the district.

As a result, most of them did not get desired output.

Amjad Hossain of Itakhola union under Nilphamari Sadar said he cultivated jute on three bighas of land. But plants on one bigha of land were completely destroyed by hail storm.
