Jomuneshwari erosion renders 200 families homeless in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Oct 3: Massive erosion in Jomuneshwari has rendered at least 200 families homeless in different villages of Lohanipara and Kutubpur unions under Badarganj upazila in the district over the last one week.
Besides, many establishments including educational and religious institutions, bank, number of offices and vast tract of croplands in the area are facing severe threat of erosion, local sources said.
Some victims said Jomuneshwari engulfed everything on its bank and they hardly could save their belongings. If adequate steps are not taken immediately, hundreds of houses may go under water soon.
They said though they are dumping sand bags to protect their properties but are failing to prevent the intensity of erosion by the mighty river.
The local people have made an appeal to the government to take immediate measures to protect their lives and properties from erosion by the mighty river.
Expressing apprehension, Sajedul Mia, a farmer of Nagerhat area said that Jomuneshwari devoured his 40 decimals of cropland during last one week.
Presently he has around 30 decimals of land which may go under water at any time, he added.
Matin, another homeless victim of Kutubpur area said he has lost his homestead to river erosion besides one bigha of cropland during the last six days.
Local union council Chairman Moktarul Islam Mandal said he has already contacted the local MP as well as other authorities seeking necessary steps including making an embankment to prevent the erosion.
