A young man was set on fire by his former in-laws at Daulatdihi village in Sadar upazila on Monday afternoon.

The victim was identified as Moniruzzaman alias Rony, 28, son of Shafiur Rahman of Amabagan village.

Shafiur Rahman said his son married Parvin, daughter of Montu Mian of Daulatdihi village some 4 years back, but recently they got divorced over some family differences, reports UNB.

Rony had gone to Parvin's house on Monday to talk about the post-marriage matters, but there people hired by her father swooped on him around 4 pm.

At one stage, they set fire to him after pouring petrol on his body, leaving him critically burnt.

Locals rescued Rony and took him to Jessore Sadar Hospital in a critical condition.

Around 50 per cent of Rony's body was burnt. His family members have been advised to send him to Dhaka for better treatment, said Subrata Singha, sub-divisional surgeon of Jessore Sadar Hospital.

AKM Ajmal Huda, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said he was not informed in this connection.
