Heavy rain damages sugarcane on 200 acres of land in Pabna

PABNA, July 08: Over 200 acres of prospective sugarcane cropland have been damaged by early heavy rain at sugar mill zone area in Pabna district.

Meanwhile around 300 sugarcane peasants are victimized with the unexpected situation in this current season. The peasants were expecting to make a bumper production as they have provided all sorts on necessary agri-input to make the cultivation a grand success.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office said the farmers of the region have brought over 4500 acres of land under sugarcane farming this season with assistance of sugar mills authority.

DAE said, among them over 200 acres of sugarcane cropland has totally been damaged due to natural calamity across the area.

"I have cultivated sugarcane on 30 decimal of land taking loan from sugar mill this season but the heavy rain has hit the farms abundantly," said farmer Abdul Aziz Hossain, 45, at Islampur unit of Muladuli sun-zone.

"I was expecting to harvest the crops after 18 weeks of its cultivation and making a good profit but early heavy rain has doused my hope." he added.

Germination of the sugarcane cropland was so satisfactory but water logging in heavy rain, sugarcane on an acre has to be destroyed, said farmer Bazlar Rahman, 54, at Ista unit of the zone.

President of Bangladesh Sugarcane Federation (BSF) Pabna region Shahjahan Ali said backbone of sugarcane peasants has been broken due to natural disastrous of the area.

Manager Director (MD) of Sugar Mill Tofazzal Hossain said we are investigating regarding damage of the crops across the area. If possible the authority concern will pour incentive among the victim peasants, he added.
