Five more cops suspended for torturing journalist

Barisal Metropolitan Police (BMP) has suspended five more members of Detective Branch (DB) of police over the incident of assault on a journalist.

Those who were suspended are sub-inspector Abdul Bashar, assistant sub-inspectors Akteruzzaman and Swapan Chandra Dey, and constables Masudul Haq and Abdur Rahim.

BMP Assistant Commissioner (DB) Nasir Uddin Mallik said the action was taken against the DB men as a probe committee found their involvement in torturing Sumon Hasan, cameraperson of DBC News.

With this, eight DB personnel have so far been suspended over the incident.

Bashar, Swapan, Akther, constables Hasan and Saiful were also found guilty in the departmental probe.

Earlier on March 14, the eight members of DB police were closed to the district police lines over the torture of the journalist and a probe committee was formed to look into the incident.

On March 13, a DB team, led by sub-inspector Abul Bashar, engaged in an alteration with Sumon Hasan during a police drive at a house near old 'Beauty Hall' at South Chawkbazar in the city.

At one stage, the DB team swooped on the journalist and beat him mercilessly. They also hit in the testicles which made him unconscious.

According to UNB, the detectives then took Sumon to their office and tortured him inhumanly again there.

Sumon alleged that the DB team swooped on him as he wanted to know about the drive.

"They got furious when I introduce myself as a journalist," he said, adding that they also threatened to implicate him in a drug case and kill him in crossfire.
