Farmers opting for maize cultivation in Sylhet

SYLHET, Mar 10: Maize cultivation is gaining popularity among the farmers in four districts of Sylhet region for the substantial profit they have stated getting from it.

According to a report of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), over 695 hectares of land have been brought under farming of the cereal in the division this year.

District-wise break-up of the total cultivation is as follows: 265 hectares in Sylhet, 55 hectares in Moulvibazar, 100 hectares in Habiganj and 275 hectares in Sunamganj district.

Additional director of DAE, Sylhet region, Md Altabur Rahman said commercial maize farming is expanding fast in the region.

Maize can be grown both in Rabi and Kharif seasons. Most of the cultivators are applying modern methods in their cropland to get a bumper production, the official added.
