SYLHET, Aug 08: most of the farmers in Sylhet division have been engaged in the cultivation of Transplanted Aman paddy in a bid to yield highest after the recent floods, officials and a number of farmers said, adding already 39 per cent of the season's target has been achieved till Thursday.
Seedbed had been prepared on a total of 22,020 hectares of land against the target of 20,421 hectares in the region, Deputy Director of the DAE's Sylhet divisional office Mazumder Mohammad Ilias said.
The division's target of production has been set at about one million metric tonnes of rice from the targeted area of 396,806 hectares. There had been some additional measures to raising the crop areas.
Of the total target area, 140,185 hectares would be in Sylhet, 101,456 hectares in Moulvibazar, 78,921 hectares in Habiganj and 76,244 hectares in Sunamganj district.
The farmers in the districts have already cultivated about 1,55,683 hectares of land which is 39 per cent of the target, informed the official this afternoon.
It includes, 72,210 hectares in Sylhet with 51 per cent progress, 42,180 hectares in Moulvibazar with 41 per cent progress and 23,815 hectares in Habiganj district having 30 per cent progress and 17,478 hectraes in Sunamganj posting a progress of 22 per cent, showed a statement prepared today, he added.
The farming is well as yet amid a good weather with required rains, he said. The total area includes139,158 hectares of high yielding varieties and 16,525 hectares of local varieties.
During the last year's Tranplanted Aman season farming of the crop was a good one with favourable weather behaviour too.
