DAE targets 1,86,500 tonnes winter vegetables production

The department of agriculture extension (DAE) in Narsingdi has fixed a target of producing 1,86,500 tonnes of winter vegetable over 8922 hectares of land in the district this Robi season.

DAE deputy director Shovan Kumer Dhar on Wednesday said the farmers in the six upazilas of the district have already started growing various kinds of winter vegetables such as cauliflower, gourd, cabbage, brinjal, bean, radish, pumpkin, tomato which they have cultivated over 7800 hectares of land.

He expressed his hope that the target of cultivation and production fixed by DAE must be exceeded this season.

The agriculture officer said necessary steps have been taken to ensure supply of quality seeds, fertilisers and other agri-inputs among the growers at fair prices to encourage farmers for winter vegetables cultivation.

Different commercial banks are providing assistance to the farmers for boosting winter vegetables production, reports BSS.

He said early varieties of winter vegetables have already appeared in local markets and the farmers are happy with its lucrative price.

Dhar said Narsingdi district is among leading vegetable productive areas in the country and it supplies about 30 to 40 per cent vegetables to the capital city and other districts.
