BOGURA, Oct 07: The Sujaitpur-Baluahat connecting bridge over the Goborchapa Canal under Sonatola upazila in the district has collapsed following recent flood.

During a recent visit to the area this correspondent found the commuters who want to go to the upazila headquarters have to travel 10- km extra distance in absence of the bridge.

Prolonged flood water washed away the bridge which was constructed in 2015 at a cost of Tk 10 million.

Sources said onrush of water in the Jamuna river washed away houses, culverts, croplands, schools, madrasas and mosques along with some 6.0 km of roads across the upazila.

Over 50,000 people in 18 villages under Sonatola upazila are facing serious trouble in travelling different areas.

"We are suffering much to attend college daily," said Salma Khatun of Government Nazir Akter Collage.

The villagers alleged that the authority concerned has not yet taken initiative to reconstruct the bridge at all.

A farmer Abdul Alim of Shalikha village said he has cultivated early-winter cauliflower to make a good profit.

"But I cannot go to the kitchen markets under Sadar upazila to sell my produce due to the poor condition of road.

Upazila Engineer of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) Mukhlesur Rahman said he has visited the spot and informed the higher authority of situation.

Executive engineer of Bogura LGED Md Saiful Kabir said, "We floted tender last month for the work. After getting work order, the repairing work will be started."
