JOYPURHAT, Nov 19: Papaya growers in the district are delighted over the bumper production this season as the authority concerned has provided logistic support to the farmers.

Besides, brisk sale made the growers happy as the wholesalers from the different adjacent districts purchase the fruit directly from the growers.

Arimul Islam of Khetlal upazila said most of the papaya growers started harvesting the item from the first week of November and it will continue until January.

Ripe papaya is selling at Tk 40 to Tk 50 per kg while the raw ones at Tk 20 to Tk 25 per kg.

"I have cultivated papaya on 43 decimals of land this season spending Tk 26,000," said Answar Ali of Akkelpur upazila.

He further said, "I have sold some 25 maunds of ripen fruits at Tk 33,000 and expecting to make profit of Tk 0.1 million from the rest of the fruit."

The Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) has taken elaborate steps to make papaya farming a success in Akkelpur, Pachbibi, Kalai, Khetlal and Sadar upazilas.

Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Sudhindranath Roy said the department has provided logistic support to the farmers so that they can get a good yield.
