Bumper lentil output likely in Bogura

BOGURA, Feb 14: With prevailing favourable weather condition and timely supply of necessary agro-input, bumper lentil output likely in Bogura this season.

During sowing seeds, Bangladesh Agriculture Department Corporation (BADC) has provided quality seeds among framers to ensure good yield.  The farmers have applied modern technologies in the crop land.

In a recent visit at Chhoto Kanchi village under Nandigram upazila the correspondent found the sapling of the crops is growing well. The peasants are giving measured fertilser and some others are separating weed from the land.

Farmers have shown more interest to bring new some cropland under the farming as they got both bumper production as well as fair market price last year, said sub-assistant agriculture officer Faridur Rahman.

"I have cultivated lentil on 22 decimals of land this season spending Tk 5,600 to pay labour, fertilser and pesticides cost," said farmer Arun Kumar under Nandigram upazila. "If I get some three maund of yield from the cropland, I will make over Tk 15,000 after paying production cost." he added.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has ensured logistic support for the Rabi crop cultivation. To grow lentil well, the farmers need to keep the soil wet.

The peasants are using pesticides to drive the pest from the cropland.  Besides, the farmer can make double profit than any other short duration cereal in the region spending little amount of money.

As a result, farming of lentil is increasing gradually in the region with DAE.  "I have brought some 33 decimals of under lentil cultivation this season since I got lucrative market price of the crop in the last couple of years," said farmer Anarul Islam under Kahaloo upazila. 

DAE official said the growers here are showing more interest in lentil cultivation as it does not need much irrigation. Besides, they got abundant production in the last few years, DAE said.
