RANGPUR, Feb 28: The bottle gourd growers in the district are in joyous mood as they are getting good yield as well as satisfactory price of their produce this year.
Peasants said with the hope to earn handsome profit they cultivated bottle gourd in recent times because they failed to make satisfactory profit from farming of some other vegetables.
This time their efforts proved successful as growers have been getting good price from its sale since the very beginning of the harvest, they further said.
Ataur, a grower of Paschim Mandrain village at Gangachara upazila told this correspondent that he cultivated bottle gourd on 40 decimals of land this year.
He has already earned Tk 20,000 by selling his produce and was expecting to earn more profit during the rest of the time.
A good number of farmers of the region have changed their financial condition by bottle gourd farming as its farming has proved lucrative in recent years, sources said.
Ahidul, a vegetable seller at Rangpur city bazar said presently, different kitchen markets of the region are overflowing with huge quantities of vegetables including bottle gourd.
The quantity is on the rise as there has been a bumper production of the vegetable this year. Per piece of bottle gourd is being sold at Tk 30 to Tk 35, he added.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Rangpur official sources the soil of many areas in the district was very suitable for vegetable cultivation.
Farmers have also been earning good profit from cultivation of different varieties of vegetables including bottle gourd in recent years. Growers are given necessary advice and assistance by the DAE officials in this regard, sources added.
