Bogura growers eyeing bumper sugarcane production

BOGURA, July 23: Due to positive behave of climate condition, sugarcane growers of Shibganj, Dhunot, Sonatola and Sariakandi upazilas of the district are expecting a bumper production this season.

According to the Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI) sources, if the farmer can be able to save the cropland from red rotten disease, they will make a good profit.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has provided logistic support among the farmers in this connection.

The farmers are also positive of getting a good yield.

Pest attack created some unrest situation among the farmer from the beginning of cultivation, said Azim uddin of Dhunot upazila.

But, the farmers overcome the situation with the assistance of the authority concerned, the grower added.

Farmer Jahurul Islam of Sonatol upazila said he is expecting to get a satisfactory output this season as the DAE provided all sort of support among the farmers.

HYV and Q-16 sugarcane varieties are popular in the district.

The farmer said Q-16 variety sugarcane needs six to seven months to be harvested.

Sugarcane grower Soleman Sheikh of Gabtoly upazila has started farming of chewing sugarcane a decade ago. This season, he has cultivated Q-16 variety sugarcane on 30 decimal spending Tk 5,600.

To cultivate a bigha of sugarcane farmers need to invest Tk 12,000 to Tk 14,000.

Profit of Tk 30,000 to Tk 35,000 can be possible from the production of a bigha of land.

Sub-assistance agriculture officer Faridur Rahman said soil of the district is suitable for Q-16 sugarcane variety.

Growers should bring more land under the farming of the cash crop, he added.
