BOGRA, Dec 12: An excellent growth of mustard across the Bogra district has made the growers optimistic of getting bumper production during the current season.

The cultivation of mustard has been easier in the region due to favourable weather condition and timely supply of necessary agri-inputs.

After getting noticeable production of previous year, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) is expecting to produce over 40,000 tonnes of mustard yield in this current Rabi season.

DAE has set a target to bring more than 27,000 hectares of land under the lucrative crops cultivation and the farmers have already planted over 25,000 hectares, said Sub-Assistance Agriculture Officer Faridur Rahman.

Anarul (34), a farmer of Shibganj upazila of the district told FE that he has taken some 40 decimal of land under mustard cultivation in this current season spending around Tk 12000 and is hoping for a bumper yield of the crop.

The farmers are now massively inspired after getting repeated bumper production with satisfactory price in recent years to cultivate mustard on more land after harvesting T-Aman rice, said DAE officials.

The DAE, along with other agriculture-related organisations, has also been providing all the necessary agri-inputs including quality seeds, latest technologies, and fertilisers to promote cultivation of the profitable crops.

Protul Chanda Sarker, Deputy Director of DAE, said the farmers have shown more interest to cultivate high yielding mustard in this season.

Meanwhile, our Nilphamari correspondent adds: Mustard cultivation has started in the district. The farmers are cultivating the oilseed crop on the same land after harvesting Aman paddy.

Highland is suitable for cultivating mustard. Low cost and easy production procedure encourage the growers to farm in on more land. It is a short-duration crop. Farmers can harvest it within 70 days of sprinkling of the seeds.

If hybrid seed is used it may produce up to 12 maunds of mustard in a bigha of land. During the harvesting period per maund price stands at Tk 2,000 in the local market.

Abdur Rahman, a farmer of Itakhola union under Sadar upazila said he cultivated mustard on one bigha of land. The growers said he would get over 10 maunds of yield this season if weather condition remains favourable. He expects to make a profit of Tk 25,000.
