Boatman injured in ‘gunfight’ in Padma

The boatman of a riverboat carrying a team of river police sustained bullet injuries in a reported gunfight between the law enforcers and fishermen in the Padma River in Louhajong upazila on Tuesday morning.

The injured was identified as Al Amin, 28.

A patrol team from Mawa River Police outpost led by Assistant Sub-inspector Shariful Islam conducted a drive in the river around 8:15am while a group of fishermen on several boats were catching hilsa defying government ban, said Arman Hossain, officer-in-charge of the outpost.

When the boat carrying policemen reached near the fishermen's boats, they started hurling brickchips.

Later, police fired two rounds from shotgun in the air as self-defence.

Being angered, the fishermen also opened fire, leaving Al Amin injured with bullet in his right leg, said the OC.

However, police could not manage to arrest anyone as all the fishermen fled the scene, report UNB.

The injured was taken at Srinagar Upazila Health Complex from where he was referred to the Sadar General Hospital for better treatment.
