Black cumin cultivation gains popularity in Gopalganj district

GOPALGANJ, Feb 25: BARI-1 black cumin cultivation is gaining popularity among the grassroots farmers of Muksudpur upazila in the district.

According to the upazila agriculture office sources, a total of 450 hectares of land have so far been brought under BARI-1 black cumin production in the area.

The herb production acreage is higher than the previous year, concerned officials said, adding, about 10,000 people are engaged in the production.

Mosna, Gobindapur, Batikamari, Maharajpur, Kamlapur, Bashbaria are Golabari areas under Muksudpur upazila are well-known for growing quality black cumin.

Noor Alam Sharif of Tangrakhola village said he is growing the crop on 15 decimals of land.

The farmer said cultivation of BARI-1 black cumin is profitable as its production cost is low.

"My production cost was around Tk 4,300 and I am expecting to get about 2.50 maunds of yield", he added.

Md Jahangir Alam of Moharajpur union said black cumin is sold at Tk 4,800 per maund in the market.

Sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Kadampur Block under Gobindapur union Sumanta Roy said black cumin farming is expanding in the area for low production cost and profitable return.
