Bitter gourd yield pleases Naogaon peasants

NAOGAON, Dec 23: Peasants in the district are happy over high yield and fair price of bitter gourd, a popular vegetable in the country. 

Bitter gourd produced in the district is being sent to different areas of the country including Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna and Barishal on regular basis.

District agriculture office sources said around 360 hectares of land have been brought under bitter gourd cultivation in the eleven upazilas of the district this year.

One Md Baten of Begunjoar village under Badalgachi upazila said he cultivated bitter gourd on five bighas of land this season.

Per maund of the produce is being sold at Tk 700 to Tk 800 in the local market, he added.

Farmer Abdul Hakim of Chandipur village under Naogaon Sadar said easy cultivation process encourages the growers to cultivate it in more land.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Naogaon, Monojit Kumar Mallik said farmers are making handsome profit from bitter gourd cultivation as the pest attack on the farmland was less than the previous years.
