Banana farmers making handsome profit

TANGAIL, Aug 16: Banana growers of different upazilas in the district are making a handsome profit this season.

Sources said a good number of people have become self-reliant by cultivating the popular and tasty fruit round the year.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Tangail, sources said Sagor, Shabri, Champa, Anaazi and Madni are the popular banana variety in the area.

Modhupur, Ghatil and Shakhipur upazilas are well-known for producing quality banana in the district, sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Ruhul Amin said.

Vegetables trader Md Hashem Miah said Anazi is different than other varieties. People consume it as a vegetable.

Farmer Saiful Islam of Modhupur upazila said banana cultivation is profitable.

"If I would have grown paddy on one bigha of land, I hardly made a profit of Tk 13,000 to Tk 15,000. But now my net profit is Tk 40,000", he added.

The cultivator further said banana farming is expanding fast in the district. 

Trader Golap Miah said 80 pieces of fresh and quality banana are selling at Tk 320 to Tk 480.

Vendor Ansar Ali said four pieces of Sorbi are being sold at Tk 20 to Tk 30, Champa at Tk 12 to Tk 15 and Shagor at Tk 10 to Tk 15.
