3,870 hectares under winter vegetable cultivation in Tangail

Frequent rainfall has come as a boon to plants' growth

TANGAIL: Growers of the district have brought a total of 3,870 hectares of land under early winter vegetables cultivation in the current season in the district.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Tangail, the early winter vegetables have been growing very well in the district due to the frequent rainfall, which has increased productivity of land.

DAE official Md. Shariful Islam said early winter vegetables are profitable ones. Every year, the local farmers are earning a handsome profit by cultivating the crops. In the current season, they are expecting a good yield of the early winter vegetables and a handsome profit too.

A good number of vegetable growers said this year they have given utmost efforts to cultivate early winter vegetables with the hope of making a windfall profit. Recent frequent rainfall has helped fulfill their dream.

A crop specialist of DAE Tangail said rain is good for farming vegetables as well as other crops and incessant rainfall is useful to vegetable cultivation, especially after the sowing period.

Abu Bakar Siddique Roni, an early winter vegetable grower of village Mamudpur of Atia union under Delduar upazila of the district, said he has been cultivating different varieties of early winter vegetables for the last few years and earning a handsome profit. Also in the current season, he is expecting more profit due to excellent production, he added.

Encouraged by previous harvest he has cultivated different items of early winter vegetables on 45 decimals of land this year. Most items are growing well due to frequent rainfall after sowing the seeds, he added.

Among the 12 upazilas of the district Modhupur, Ghatail, Shakhipur, Mirzapur and Tangail sadar are producing major portion of winter vegetables in the district, DAE officials sources said.

Most winter vegetables grown in the area are-- radish, cabbage, cauliflower, bean, bottle gourd etc.

Afjal Hossain, a vegetables grower of village Kuchiamari under Tangail sadar, said, "In the current season we are expecting a bumper production of early winter vegetables as these are growing well due to the favourable weather condition."
