NARSINGDI, Nov 30 (UNB): Bean cultivation has been gaining popularity in the district after a large number of farmers have involved themselves in bean farming considering good profit in low investment of the winter vegetable.

Farmers usually cultivate bean on abandoned land and on the premises of their houses while many are cultivating bean on commercial basis.

According to the sources at the DAE, farmers of the district have cultivated bean on some 3,500 hectares of land.

While visiting some villages in Shibpur, Belabo, Raipura, Palash, Narsingdi Sadar and Monohardi upazilas, this correspondent found farmers were working in their bean fields with much enthusiasm.

According to the bean farmers, Tk 4,000 to Tk 5,000 is needed to cultivate bean on one bigha of land.

Farmers sow the seeds at the end of Bangla month of Ashar, but the full season begins from Kartik.

At the beginning of the season, bean is sold at exorbitant prices. Gradually, the prices come down with adequate supply.

Rashid Mia, a bean cultivator of Voroter Kandi village in Shibpur upazila, said they pluck five to six mounds of bean from one bigha of land every week.

"I have planted beans expending Tk 20,000 on one bigha of land and I am expecting to earn at least Tk 80,000 by selling the produce," Hormuja Begum, wife of Haris Miah, a resident of Voroter Kandi village, said.
