Country observes International Women’s Day

The International Women's Day was observed in the country, as elsewhere across the globe, on Friday with the focus on gender equality and the empowerment of women.

This year's theme was 'Think equal, build smart, innovate for change', according to UNB.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called upon all to support women and girls who are breaking down barriers to create a better world for everyone.

Different organisations arranged elaborate programmes, including rallies, discussions and cultural events, marking the day.

Products produced and manufactured by women entrepreneurs are being displayed in the district towns on March 8-9.

Everest Academy, Emogo Sports Management Limited and Bangladesh Athletics Federation arranged the Dhaka Women's Marathon-2019' in the city where over 500 women took part.

They ran a 10-km-long course in the marathon arranged jointly by held in city's Hatirjheel area.

The marathon started from Film Development Corporation (FDC) intersection of Hatirjheel at 6:30am and ended at Concord Police Plaza point after parading the Hatirjheel area.

Begum Badrunnesa Ahmed Trust honoured enlightened women at a programme at the International Mother Language Institute.

Those honoured are country's first female Deputy Leader of the House and Environment and Forests Minister Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, first female Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun, first women Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, first female Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni and first Major General Susane Giti.

The Women and Children Affairs Ministry will arrange a discussion at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on Saturday where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to join as the chief guest.

Five women will be honoured with 'Joyeeta Award' at the programme.
